Mairangi Bay
The area which today comprises Murrays and Mairangi Bays were bought in 1881 by English farmer, Joseph Murray. His property extended behind the two bays which were then referred to as "Small Murrays" and "Big Murrays". This, understandably caused confusion, so after much dispute the name Mairangi Bay was chosen to replace "Big Murrays". "Mairangi" means "welcome sun".
